Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy

CST Therapy Explained

In the realm of holistic therapies, craniosacral therapy stands out as a gentle yet powerful approach to healing. Rooted in the belief that the body has its own innate wisdom to heal, this therapy focuses on the craniosacral system – the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Here, we delve into what craniosacral therapy entails, its potential benefits, and personal insights that shed light on its effectiveness.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a hands-on therapy that involves gentle manipulation of the craniosacral system. Practitioners use light touch to detect and correct imbalances in the craniosacral rhythm, which is believed to affect the functioning of the central nervous system. This therapy was developed from osteopathy and has since evolved into a standalone holistic practice. This is one of our many physical medicine modalities we may incorporate into a treatment plan but it is also one of my favorites.

The Experience of Craniosacral Therapy

My Experience with craniosacral Therapy:
Over the years of practicing CST I have truly came to love this therapy and its use with my patients. As my practice has developed I have seen more and more breakthroughs each year. It is amazing how working on the physical body can provide much relief for my patients. I have seen this work wonders with the physical body but also transcending into the somatoemotional elements a patient may have.

How Does Craniosacral Therapy Work?

Craniosacral Rhythm and Healing: Central to CST is the concept of the craniosacral rhythm, a subtle pulse that can be felt throughout the body. This rhythm is believed to be influenced by the movement of cerebrospinal fluid, which nourishes and protects the brain and spinal cord. By gently manipulating the craniosacral system, practitioners aim to enhance the flow of this fluid and restore balance to the central nervous system.

Potential Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy

1. Stress Relief and Relaxation: The gentle, non-invasive nature of CST promotes deep relaxation, which can help alleviate stress and tension held in the body. By calming the nervous system, it allows for a profound sense of relaxation that can aid in overall well-being.

2. Pain Management: CST has been known to help with various types of pain, including headaches, back pain, and joint discomfort. By addressing underlying imbalances and restrictions in the body, it supports natural pain relief and improves mobility.

3. Emotional Release and Mental Clarity: Emotions and stress can manifest as physical tension in the body. CST facilitates emotional release by creating a safe space for the body to let go of stored emotions. Many clients report feeling lighter and more mentally clear after sessions.

Who Can Benefit from Craniosacral Therapy?

CST is suitable for people of all ages, from infants to the elderly. It is often used to treat a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Chronic pain syndromes
  • TMJ disorders
  • Concussions and head injuries
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Digestive disorders
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Emotional imblances

Because of its gentle nature, CST is particularly well-suited for individuals who are sensitive to touch or prefer non-invasive therapies.

Patient Case Study:

Patient X came to see me with over a decade of eczematic skin lesions. For years patient X tried every conventional treatment. All, ultimately having the eczema come back. After a thorough review of patient X, holistically, things that stood out to me were:

1. Eczema, just a sign of the immune system being dysregulated, but actually an expression of something deeper within.

2. A history of gastrointestinal issues. Problems with certain foods, bloating and abdominal discomfort.

3. A history of unresolved trauma. Don’t ever forget the emotional. The mind conscious or subconscious manifests physically.

After putting these pieces together we did the following:

1. An elimination diet and gut rebuilding protocol.

2. Topical barrier creams for the symptoms on the skin.

3. Craniosacral therapy (somato-emtional release form) to work on the mental-emotional connection and release of trauma.

Three months after this, patient X came back in and was noticeably more vibrant, GI complaints resolved and eczema free. One month after this, still healthy and vibing patient X decided to start dating once again since their health was back: mind, body and soul. 2 months later got engaged. End of this year, getting married and still eczema free :-)
