PRP Microneedling Facial

Microneedling and PRP Explaines

If you’re into skincare, you’ve probably heard of the “vampire facial.” This treatment has become a go-to for many looking to prevent signs of aging like wrinkles, volume loss, sunspots, laxity, and pigmentation changes. The nickname “vampire facial” might sound a bit spooky, but it's actually derived from the use of your own blood to rejuvenate your skin. This innovative treatment utilizes Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), which is a component of your blood packed with growth factors that help stimulate healing and boost collagen production. This has been one of our favorite regenerative medicine treatments in our offices over the years.

What is PRP?

So, why the nickname “vampire facial”? The main ingredient in this treatment is a part of your blood called PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma. To get PRP, we draw a small amount of your blood and spin it in a centrifuge to separate the PRP, which is rich in growth factors. When microneedled into the skin, PRP stimulates wound healing and boosts collagen production.

Why is PRP so popular?

PRP Microneedling is highly effective at increasing collagen and elastin production, which means tighter pores, lifted skin, faded scars, smoother skin, fewer wrinkles, and a more even tone and texture. Studies show that four PRP Microneedling treatments done once a month can lead to a 400% increase in both collagen and elastin after six months.

Think of collagen as the glue that holds your skin together, giving it that natural bounce, fullness, and elasticity. After age 18, collagen production drops by 1% each year, and for women, it can drop by 30% in the first few years of menopause. PRP Microneedling facials are an excellent way to combat this natural decline. It’s no wonder celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Aniston, and Angelina Jolie have made this treatment a part of their skincare routines to keep their skin looking fabulous.

What to expect with PRP Microneedling:

The whole procedure takes about an hour to address the entire face. If you want to include the neck and chest, that can be added on in an additional 30 minutes.

We’ll start with a skin evaluation and consultation to identify areas of concern, discuss your at-home skincare routine, and explain what to expect during the visit. I recommend booking a separate medical consult to address the internal root causes of skin issues (acne, pigmentation, etc.), often related to gut health, hormonal imbalances, nutrition, and liver health.

First, you’ll cleanse your face with Tulsi Rosehip Cleanser to remove any makeup. Next, we’ll apply a numbing cream and let it sit for 30 minutes. During this time, your blood will be drawn and spun to extract the PRP. Once you’re numb, we’ll remove the cream and start microneedling the PRP into your skin. Some mild discomfort and pain can be expected.

Downtime & Aftercare:

Compared to other facial procedures, PRP Microneedling has minimal downtime. After the treatment, your skin will likely be red and sensitive, and you may see some pinpoint bleeding. It’s best to schedule this treatment when you don’t have any major events coming up. By days 2-4, your face should return to its normal color, and you can go about your regular activities.

Post-treatment, let the PRP soak into your skin for at least eight hours. The next day, you can cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser and apply makeup, moisturizer, and other doctor-approved products. Your skin will be regenerating during this time, so avoid sun exposure and apply sunscreen if you go outside. Some dryness and flaking can occur due to rapid turnover of skin cells, but this is temporary. By day seven, you should notice smoother and more radiant skin. Avoid activities that cause sweating (exercise, sauna, sun) and swimming during the healing period.

When will I see results after PRP Microneedling?

On average, it takes about 2–3 weeks to see visible improvements in your skin after microneedling. After 4–6 weeks, you should see a significant difference. However, this depends on your skin condition and the severity of your concerns. The best results come from consecutive treatments once a month for three months. Spacing treatments too far apart can reduce results.

How to Maximize Results of your PRP Microneedling Facial:

To boost collagen production even further, eat foods rich in vitamin C and zinc or take supplements one week before and after your treatment. Vitamin C and zinc are essential for collagen synthesis. Zinc is also great for reducing acne due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, and it helps reduce oil production. Fresh fruits and vegetables like kiwi, strawberries, avocados, peas, edamame, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, leafy greens, and broccoli are packed with vitamin C and zinc.

Are PRP Microneedling Facials safe?

PRP microneedling is generally safe for most people. However, it’s not recommended for those who:

- Are using or have recently used Accutane or a similar medication

- Have chronic infections or illnesses

- Have a history of easy bleeding or bruising

- Have eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, or other chronic sensitive skin conditions
